As per usual, I threw all I could find about the artists into Chatgpt and it came up with this….

Nick Tann’s Fresh Music Fix – Episode 21

We’re back with another fresh batch of incredible original music, and this week we’re mixing power pop, political bite, heartfelt energy and some good old guitar-led charm.

First up, The Forensics set the pace with Maxine. Hailing from Preston, this working-class four-piece hit hard with layers of electric guitar and uplifting energy. A band that sounds tight, powerful, and real. They’ve got the sound, the swagger, and the songs. Follow them on Instagram here: @forensicsband

Next, Nearly Skulls drop Only In America, a slick, punchy track with big production and even bigger intent. Built on British-American influences like Gang of Four, Foo Fighters, and R.E.M., this one’s a statement as much as it is a song. It’s bold, smart, and very, very listenable. Check them out here: www.nearlyskulls.com

Track three is from my own band, Nick Tann and The Whole Family, and it’s the final track from our Live at The Bedford EP – Can’t Stop Missing You. I tell the story behind this performance on the show, but let’s just say it was the encore, and it absolutely flies. You can find out more, stream the EP, and get gig updates here: nicktann.co.uk

We wrap things up with the legendary Candy Opera and their beautifully crafted single Start All Over Again. Formed back in 1982, reformed in 2019, and now finding new audiences around the world, Candy Opera still write songs with real charm and staying power. From sharing stages with The Wedding Present and The Real People to releasing critically acclaimed albums, this is a band worth revisiting. Their music, story and merch are all right here: candyopera.bandcamp.com

Welcome to another episode of Nick Tann’s Fresh Music Fix, where original music always takes centre stage.< /p>

We kick things off with a banger from Leon Blanchard and The Tiny Giants. The track is Astronaut and it absolutely soars. I didn’t get to share the full story on the pod, so here’s the deal. Leon first came to light fronting The Brightlights, an indie band that won Channel 4’s Road to V competition back in 2007. They landed a main stage slot at V Festival and grabbed attention across the UK music press. But just as things were taking off, the band vanished like a haddock at Steels Cornerhouse in Cleethorpes. (Trust me, that’s fast.)

Leon didn’t disappear though. He went deep into songwriting, quietly building his craft away from the spotlight. That journey really came into focus during the pandemic, when solitude became the creative spark. Working with legendary producer Dave Formula from Magazine, Leon shaped a full album that hits hard and feels honest.

Next up is a track from my own band Nick Tann and the Whole Family. This one’s I Believe in Love from our new live EP Live at the Bedford. You’ll find everything from videos to merch and more on my website: nicktann.co.uk

After that, we welcome back The British IBM with their killer new track Things Change. These guys have a fascinating story and even better music. Do yourself a favour and head over to their website, it’s packed with great content: thebritishibm.com

Rounding things off in style, we’ve got Paleblu and Laville bringing some top-tier drum and bass with Overseas. It’s smooth, punchy and totally addictive.

This week’s episode of Nick Tann’s Fresh Music Fix  opens with a track from my own band — Nick Tann and The Whole Family — and the first cut, Had It All, from our brand new live EP Live at The Bedford. Naturally, I think it’s brilliant — but you can judge for yourself. Watch the live video here and check out the rest via my website where you’ll find links to all my socials and releases.

Coming in next is Liverpool-based powerhouse Van Royale with the thundering Coming After You. This band has been shaking the North West for the last two years and shows no sign of slowing. Catch live clips and more on their Instagram and YouTube channel.

We then shift gears with Abz Winter and her firecracker of a single Tired of You. Fierce, honest and full of Paramore energy, this one hits hard. Find her on Instagram, TikTok or Facebook.

Finally, Doctor Black closes out the show with Drag Me Down — a track that’s been hiding in my inbox for too long. Rob Rees handles everything in the studio, but you’ll want to catch the full band live. Everything you need is right there in their Linktree.

PLUS – in this episode, I talk about my original podcast Is This Thing On, which I launched way back in 2008. I featured hundreds of brilliant unsigned artists — including Catfish and the Bottlemen, Men They Couldn’t Hang, and even Kajagoogoo. Yes, really. The entire archive is still live at isthisthingonpodcast.com and on all major podcast platforms.

I also chat passionately about the importance of live music and venues — the lifeblood of everything we celebrate on this show.

If you’re enjoying these discoveries, subscribe to the podcast on Spotify, Apple, YouTube, or wherever you get your podcasts.

You can also subscribe via the website to get new episodes and updates sent straight to your inbox — no algorithms, just new music.

Thanks for listening — and if you find a new favourite artist here, share the episode, leave a rating, or drop a comment. Every bit helps shine a light on these incredible musicians.
