Nick Tann’s Fresh Music Fix – Episode 24 

First up, a quick apology for Chris’s mic in the early part of the episode. I forgot to press the right button, so you may need to strain your ears a little for his early comments. Thankfully, he returns in glorious stereo right after the first track.

We open with Palejoy and their grunge-laced banger Next Goal Wins. This is a band that delivers the kind of emotional weight we love. Described as Aberdeen’s own emo torchbearers, yet I was getting Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana at the same time. Follow them here:

Next is the brilliant Grete with her latest single See U More. Possibly her best recording to date in my view. It’s now four hours later and that hook is still playing in my head. We’ve played Grete on the podcast a few times before and she’s become a firm favourite. This track takes her to a whole new level. Grete was born and raised in Lithuania and began performing at the age of three. She’s performed on TV, in musical theatre, and even reached the finals of The Voice of Lithuania. The craft and control in this song is incredible. Follow her here:

Third is a track that really spoke to both Chris and me – Joe Hodgson with his instrumental You I Think Of. We both heard echoes of George Benson in this beautifully expressive piece. Joe is from Ballymagorry in Northern Ireland and his music reflects the wildness and spirit of that place. After years of playing with bands across Europe, Joe returned home and released his debut solo album Apparitions in 2020 to wide acclaim. His guitar work is so skilled and well thought out. To finish, we bring in Van Royale with Set In Stone. This is a track that smacks you in the chest!. From the hooky guitar line to the aching vocal delivery, it’s a masterclass in melodic metal. There’s something very Jeff Buckley in the emotion and tone and the guitar has that Buckley rawness and emotion that I absolutely adored. This is a band that is continuing to impress us with every release.

We open this episode with Two Odds Make an Even from Star Circus – a multi-layered, anthemic track that gives the show a cracking start.

What we didn’t mention on air:
Star Circus was formed in 2019 by frontman Dave, whose songwriting caught the ear of legendary DJ Tony Wilson. The two worked together on the debut album Separate Sides, released in December 2022 to critical acclaim. Following UK tours supporting a host of international acts, the band evolved into a true collaborative project, with new songwriters and standout guest guitarists like Tom Draper (ex-Carcass, Spirit Adrift) and Ritchie Mohicano (Dobermann). You’ll also hear Sophie’s powerful vocals featured across the new album.

Next up, Saving Grace by Cry For Mercy – a slow-burn rock track that builds with every listen.

During lockdowns, the band turned inward and focused on writing, producing their debut Resist, followed by 2022’s Time and Tide and 2024’s Dry Bones. Their latest full-length, This Machine, dropped on April 4 and is packed with heart and heavy grooves.

Oliver Anderson’s Money hit us right between the eyes – short, sharp, and emotionally rich.

A stunning vocal delivery fuels this anti – grind culture anthem. It’s a defiant alt-rock tune that questions the way hustle culture devalues our experiences and wellbeing. A powerful message wrapped in just the right amount of fuzz.

We paused for a quick rant about coffee. You know how it is.

Then it was time for Velour Fog and their monster new track Fake. Think Rage Against The Machine with a grime edge – this one punches hard.

These guys live where hip-hop meets rock, and they own it. I also gave a shoutout to The Spice of Life – a great venue where both Velour Fog and I have performed.

We kick off this week’s episode with an absolute banger from Lea G – Again and Again.

Her bio says:

Next up is Masi Masi with The Rain – a track that hits my musical pleasure centre and ticks all the right boxes.

Based in Bradford, Masi Masi recorded this gritty, groove-laden track in a friend’s garage in LA. He slept on the floor and crafted what has become the third release from an upcoming album. Featuring James Kirk on drums and Adrian Padilla (also co-producer) on guitar, The Rain offers a clear glimpse into the raw energy of the Masi Masi live experience.

He’ll be playing a hometown show in Leeds this summer, as well as sets at Beatherder Festival and on This Feeling’s stage at the Isle of Wight Festival.

Third on the list is Novelist Me with Why Do You Talk – track 9 from their latest album.” A minimalist breakup cut that’s almost too honest for comfort. “So happy for you / But not so much for me” is the kind of line you only say once before hating yourself for it. The repetition of “Why do you talk?” is a dagger cloaked in indie ennui”
When I played this to a few friends, it split the room. Marmite vibes. Love it or hate it – you decide. I obviously love it.

We close the show with New Royal Standard and their outstanding track Soul Crushing.
This one left us smiling – a beautifully layered production with a killer chorus and some real lyrical bite.

Here’s a snippet from their bio:
